Government responds to emissions reductions monitoring report
The Government has released its response to He Pou a Rangi - Climate Change Commission’s annual monitoring report on emissions reductions.

Every year, the Commission provides an independent report on how Aotearoa New Zealand is progressing toward its emissions reduction goals.
Its emissions reduction monitoring report covers progress toward New Zealand’s 2050 target and the first three emissions budgets, progress toward implementing the second emissions reduction plan, and opportunities to reduce emissions.

In its formal response, the Government acknowledges the Commission's findings and recommendations.
The latest available emissions projections indicate New Zealand can meet its first and second emissions budgets, covering 2022 to 2025, and 2026 to 2030. The response covers how the Government will continue to monitor delivery of the second emissions reduction plan, including using the annual adaptive management assessment to determine whether any additional action is needed to keep the plan on track.
More measures will be needed to meet the third emissions budget, covering 2031 to 2035. The Government has asked officials to provide advice on options to close the gap to meet the third emissions budget.
Emissions projections are published each year to assess how New Zealand is tracking towards emissions budgets and targets. The Government will continue to refine how it produces its emissions projections, using the best available evidence. Updated projections of New Zealand's emissions to 2050 are due to be released later this year.
