Third stage of Māori Climate Platform funding confirmed
Approximately $1.36 million of government funding will support four more Māori-led and marae-based climate resilience projects.
The funding is the third stage of the Māori Climate Platform. The platform supports Māori climate action by investing in locally-led initiatives that strengthen the ability of marae and communities to adapt to or mitigate the impacts of climate change.
The fund is administered by the Ministry for Cities, Environment, Regions and Transport. Ongoing delivery and independent evaluation of the Māori Climate Platform is supported by Pou Take Āhuarangi, Climate Lead for the National Iwi Chairs Forum.
Subject to final contract negotiations, Stage 3 projects are expected to include flood protection and land stabilisation works, renewable energy, and improvements to water supply resilience and stormwater management.
Stage 3 was developed following the severe weather events of January and February 2026 and uses the remaining Māori Climate Platform funding to support a smaller number of targeted projects.
These projects are located across seven marae, including communities affected by severe weather this year, and regions identified as being at high risk from severe weather and climate change.
The $1.36 million allocated for Stage 3 is in addition to the $10.8 million investment already provided through the Māori Climate Platform’s Stages 1 and 2. These stages are supporting 23 climate initiatives that benefit 70 marae across New Zealand.
